This research examines the role housing plays in the settlement of this community in Australia. There is a limited but growing body of literature addressing the social issues experienced by humanitarian migrants to Australia. What seems under-researched in the studies of housing provision for humanitarian migrants are case studies of how the economic, social and cultural needs of African refugees from the perspective of a given community affect their capacity to access housing that is both affordable and appropriate to their needs. This research seeks to add to the knowledge base on refugee settlement with a case study of the housing experiences of Sudanese refugees living in Adelaide, South Australia. Adelaide has a large Sudanese community. The researcher is a member of the South Australian Sudanese community who came to Australia as a refugee on a humanitarian visa. He worked in migration and community services before returning to university.
